Why Should I Buy Vintage?

We all know there’s a lot that exists out there in the world. Ease of production, cheap labor, expedited shipping, etc make it super easy to purchase on a whim in our world today. However, this leads to a lot of waste. It’s no secret that the fashion world, especially fast fashion, overproduces and is a huge contributor to water and plastic pollution. Reselling companies like ThredUp have made recycling clothing easier, which is a wonderful thing. So aside from saving the world, why choose secondhand or vintage items?

Since I was young, I’ve loved vintage clothing. I love the hunt, I love the romance that each piece has its own history, and…. It's usually more affordable! Plus, when you pick out a vintage dress, odds are, you’re not going to see someone else with that same thing. You’re truly getting something that is one of a kind. 

That’s what speaks to me the most about the vision of Haus of Mourning. I’m trying to create meaningful items that are truly one of a kind. Whether you’re buying for yourself or someone else, you’re getting a personalized experience. 

Recently, I’ve found certain items I love to repurpose. Vintage signet rings make the most wonderful base for skull emblems, upcycled stick pins or charms. The possibilities are endless! I’ve also recently figured out how to dismantle class rings, pins, etc to make them a base for current day “trims” like daggers or crosses. I love giving new life to something that was only relevant to a small group of people (i.e. Woodward High School Class of 1942). 

Clothing can also be upcycled to take on a completely new life. My current favorite thing to do is combine sweaters, jackets or blazers with band t-shirts to add a unique and customized twist on something otherwise simple. 

Why be like everyone else? Find items that bring you joy and are truly unique. You’re not only shopping more sustainably but you’re getting something that is unique and truly you.
