Kalie Krause- Through the Lens of a Camera

Kalie Krause is quite near and dear to us here at Haus of Mourning. In fact, if you browse the website, you will see many of her photos. She has captured the stunning models on rooftops and jewelry in cemeteries. Kalie is quite willing to go the distance for a great photo.

Kalie grew up in Sandusky, Ohio and as a child, she had a severe fear of death. To help ease her worries, her mom took her to Woodlawn, a cemetery in Norwalk and they would do grave rubbings and walk around. Today, it’s easy to see cemeteries are a huge focal point for her photos.

While photography is her main focus now, she’s taken many other paths before finding her footing as that of an artist. At 18, she delved into photography doing a split major of photography and art history at The Ohio State University. However, she switched over to developmental psychology and neuroscience. Kalie continued on with photography the whole time but it was mostly a job for her. She captured many weddings throughout that time, and still photographs weddings today.

After college, she taught preschool and lived back in Sandusky and then Mansfield. In 2017, she made the leap to move to Cincinnati. Kalie started a photography job at Everything But the House which led her to focusing on photography more confidently and artistically. With Spring Grove Cemetery in her grasp, she started frequenting the grounds, finally taking photos for herself to enjoy.

Over the last few years, her photography has built up quite the following. Kalie’s photography book, Eternal Sermon, published by Black Flower Publishing is due out in 2023 and features stunning photographs of nature in Spring Grove Cemetery. All of the day shots in the book are film photography and the night shots are digital.

Kalie excels in capturing nature in a way that is haunting and striking. She finds so much life at the cemetery and it’s juxtaposed with the darkness of a mournsome setting. Stay tuned on where you can buy Eternal Sermon as well as prints of her photography.
